Tikka T3 Varmint .223 Rem - 1:10 twist???
« on: August 30, 2013, 11:16:24 AM »

Hi all,

I am new to the Tikka scene and just picked up a new Tikka T3 Varmint in .223 Remington. After a great deal of research I settled on the Tikka based on all the features and for the 1:8 twist barrel.

After picking up the Tikka, I noticed that the box says 10" twist and the barrel is also stamped 10". All the retailers that have specifications on the Varmint list it as a 8" twist (even the retailer that I bought it from).

Do the .223 Varmint versions all come in 10" twist now? I am kind of disappointed if that is the case, since I feel a bit misinformed and I was hoping to shoot with heavier bullets (75-80 grains).

Also, does anyone know what the heaviest bullets a 10" twist will stabilize? I am using this primarily for paper punching out to 600 yards (my local range's max).

Thanks for the help!

All the new .223's recently switched over to the new twist rate. You should be o.k. with a 69rg Sierra, but this is just a guess. All three of my .223's are 8 twist.

I would have a serious talk with your retailer about the specific rifle you were under the impression you were purchasing, and didn't receive. :'(

I would be pissed!  >:(

as yukonal said, I recommend you have a serious talk with the company that sold me the gun. if I were you I would return the gun and demand a full refund of every dollar I spent (shipping, FFL, and tax).

Hi
My super Varmint is a 12:1 which for the UK is how they now come , If I really wanted a 8:1 it would be a factory order with at least a 6month wait , my 12:1 should be (imo) good for up to 400yards the 8:1 up to 1000yards or so I'm lead to believe , so 10:1 should be midway witch is where you actually want it , but if you might go further you will need the 8:1  , another option would be a tikka action on a custom gun , it depends on your budget ,

What .223 bullet will a 10 twist stabilize properly, that the wind won't blow all over, that will shoot accurately at 600 yards to make it worthwhile?

I did talk to the retailer (out of state) and their return policy is more complicated since I have taken possession of the firearm. Basically there is a % restocking fee + ship, etc. so I decided to just save the hassle and keep it.

I did end up calling Beretta afterwards and spoke with a someone that seemed knowledgeable on the matter. They told me in the past year or two they have been importing 10" twist barrels for their .223 Remington models (except for the Sporter model which still keeps the 8" twist). As to why they decided to switch from 8" to 10" is beyond me.

Assuming Beretta no longer has 8" twist Varmint models in stock, I'd imagine it would be hard to find a retailer with a 8" twist even if I returned this rifle to continue my search for another.

I plan to just developing rounds of various makes/weights and see what this particular barrel will like. I'm sure at some point in the future I will need a new barrel anyways so I will order one with a twist to my own liking at that time.
