Tikka T3X 300 Win mag - opinions?
« on: October 24, 2019, 08:47:57 AM »

Looking at purchasing a TIKKA T3X 300 WIN MAG.   Looking for opinions on this particular chambering.

I donít plan on doing my own reloading and wonít be regularity shooting anything bigger than a 200 gr.   Probably mostly 180gr ish rounds.

Curious about how the 1:11 twist rate is working out, accuracy, recoil on the T3X, etc.  Probably a lot more info that could be provided.   Just looking for thoughts on the rifle from anyone who has one.

I shoot a 300wsm and have a few buddies that shoot the 300WM so have some experience shooting both platforms.

If you are a reloader I would push you towards the WSM, but seeing as you will be buying factory ammo them the WM for sure...The 2 guys I shoot with that have them are pleased with accuracy using factory ammo but you can dial it in better with handholds like any rifle...they are getting 1moa-2moa with most all factory ammo.  Some obviously better than others.  The 11 twist barrel will stabilize up to a 200-208gr bullet depending on ogive.  The 11 twist will shoot the 200gr ELDx and 208gr Amax extremely well but we are seating bullets for optimum performance...check out post 13-15 in this thread to see how the factory barrel can handle the 200gr Eldx...http://www.tikkashooters.com/public_html/general-discussion/anyone-playing-with-hornady's-new-eld-eldx-bullets-yet/msg9636/#msg9636

I generally agree with Dogdown.
The 1:11 twist will stabilize the same bullets regardless of WM or wsm.
If you want the high end of performance and are willing to modify the rifle for AICS mags then go for the win mag. Otherwise go for the wsm.
My 2 cents

Thx guys.   Was looking for a 300 win mag then I was at my local gun shop and he had a used T3 300wsm for one heck of a price...and of course after a little bit of discussion the price got even more attractive.  You can probably see where I am going with this....I now own a T3 300WSM.   Guess Iíll be adding my thoughts after I go to the range on Saturday.

Did a little minor work on it after mounting a scope, (cleaned, torqued the action screws to 35 inlbs as well as replaced the aluminum recoil lug with a steel one, put on a LimbSaver pad and filled the hollow butt end of the stock with foam).

Looking forward to seeing how it shoots.   For now I bought a couple boxes of 165 gr TBT from Federal Premium.  That is good to hear though that the 1:11 works  well up  to ~200gr.

Will let you know how it goes.

We've had great accuracy with the Barnes TTSX 165gr for factory ammo if you looking for options.
1-2" @ 200yrds consistantly.

if you do get into hand loading for that rifle hit me up...i can share some intel you will enjoy at the range.
